Profile of Franzi.

Interview with Franziska Mähl

Head of the Customizing Department in the area of products.

How did you learn about Com In?

First off, I must confess that I had no interest in computer science right after I graduated from high school. Although math and physics were my strongest subjects, my passion led me in the direction of agriculture, and I first got my diploma in agricultural engineering. I gained my first professional experience in administration, but quickly noticed that I would never be able to do this job in the long term. During this time, PCs were becoming more and more prevalent in the world of work, and since I didn’t see a future for myself in agriculture, I refocused on my strengths in logical thinking and embarked on a completely new path by retraining as an IT specialist. When the time came to find a place for my mandatory internship, someone recommended Com In. And then it all happened pretty quickly for me. A first point of contact turned into an interview, and suddenly I was part of the team. That happened 20 years ago, and I haven’t regretted a single day.

What challenges/tasks does your job entail?

To me, there’s nothing worse than stagnation. I want to make a contribution with my actions, which is why I’m used to regularly questioning things and continually finding them anew. This always worked great at Com In.

From my early days as a programmer and coaching new employees through to technical quality assurance and team organization or interim management of the Dev department – at Com In, I was always able to leverage my personal strengths and promote them accordingly. Recently, I switched to a completely different area with completely new challenges and now hold the title of “Head of the Customizing Department”.

I think this is the kind of attitude that determines success or failure in the long term. It’s never been more important to continually develop your own skills and abilities, both professionally and on a personal level. It’s important to keep examining new specialist topics to be able to communicate with customers at eye level. Fortunately, it doesn’t take long to find the necessary motivation at Com In. The software products and their versatile application possibilities offer enough to get excited about.

What do you like about your job and Com In?

Com In isn’t a brief affair, it’s a marriage. You’re not simply an employee – you’re more of a partner, from the very start. We interact with one another in an honest, open way, and don’t take ourselves and our sensitivities too seriously. WE as a team and our shared goal always come first. Com In is also my fountain of youth, because it continually provides me with new development and expansion opportunities when required by my personal life circumstances or because the range of tasks is simply getting too small for me.

In brief, my colleagues and of course the exciting product portfolio have kept me feeling enthusiastic for over 20 years of working for Com In. Today, I can’t imagine my life without either.

What do you do in your free time?

Much to the chagrin of my husband, I fell in love with horseback riding in my youth. As a trained riding instructor, I still teach riders and horses once a week after nearly 40 years. A few years ago, I was able to fulfil my dream of training my own horse. This and the care involved are very elaborate and take up a lot of time. But a ride through the fields makes up for everything. I like to spend the rest of my time with my husband on our boat. We live close to the Baltic, and an evening on the Wismar bay always feels like a little vacation.
